Last weekend, Ruben and I ventured to a new Thai Restaurant, called the Thai Marina, in Lincoln. I had previously eaten at the restaurant before for a friends birthday and loved it! So I thought i'd take Ruben there and show him the amazing cuisine this restaurant has to offer. The restaurant is located along the Brayford, which is a riverside location with lots of other restaurants surrounding it. Unfortunately, Thai Marina is right at the end of the strip of restaurants and slightly tucked away round the corner, which might explain why it wasn't as busy as we'd expected.
We'd booked a table online and when we arrived, we were greated by a very friendly host and shown to our table. Initially we thought it was bizarre being sat on a table for four when it was just the two of us, however when the food started flowing we were grateful for the extra room!
The staff were very attentive and very soon after we'd sat down a lovely waitress came over to take our drinks order. We went for a bottle of white wine, which was very reasonably priced, and it was brought over very promptly and poured for each of us. Whenever our wine glasses were getting low on wine they would be topped up again!
There were lots of things to choose from on the menu and lots of vegetarian dishes too, which was good to see. We were going to have one of the set menus, however some of the dishes like the Tom Kha Gai (chicken soup) didn't take our fancy so we decided to just order a few dishes to share. Firstly, we went for a small bowl of Thai prawn crackers, but when they arrived there was nothing small about them so i'm glad we didn't go for the large portion! They were delicious, with just a hint of spice, and were accompanied by a delicious peanut sauce and a carrot and cucumber pickle.
We opted for a mixed sharing starter, the Thai Marina Favourites Basket, which consisted of chicken spring rolls, filo prawns, minced chicken and prawns on toast, chicken satay, prawn golden parcels and crispy caramelised rice noodles, all served with thai sweet chilli sauce, peanut sauce and a cucumber and carrot pickle. My favourite parts of the starter were the filo prawns and the chicken and prawns on toast. It was lovely to have a selection of different things to try and at only £8 per person, I thought it was great value! The food was presented on a golden/bronze platter with some fantastic food origami.
The mains arrived shortly after and you could tell the food has been cooked from fresh! The combination of flavours was outstanding on my chicken Pud Med Ma Maung, which is a stir-fry dish with lots of green peppers, cashews, onions, spring onions, mushrooms with a sweet chilli sauce. The chicken had a very thin batter coating it, which was perfectly crispy! Ruben decided to go for crispy boneless Sea bass in a sweet chilli and garlic sauce, topped with crispy sweet basil. The portion size was huge and the presentation was so lovely! The fish was very succulent and flaked off the skin, and the sauce was sweet and delicious. We decided to share a coconut rice, and I'm glad we did! Portion size is definitely not a problem in this restaurant! We couldn't fit in a dessert but there was a lovely selection of sorbets and other similar things!
When we requested the bill, we were brought hot flannels which had been bathed in lemon, which was a lovely touch!
The presentation of the whole meal was second to none and all of the food was perfectly cooked and flavoursome! We had a very enjoyable meal and would definitely recommend the restaurant, it was just a shame that it wasn't very busy because they deserve so many more customers!
I could sit here all night long and sing their praises, but if you happen to be in Lincoln i'd definitely recommend you check out the Thai Marina, you won't be disappointed!
